Man's Best Friend

Don't call him a dog lover, but Patrick Burns does enjoy taking care of American working terriers. After all, he's been doing so since he was about five years old, though he only started hunting with the rambunctious pups 10 years ago.
Don't call him a dog trainer or a show dog person, though he does enjoy, defend, and respect those dogs and will continue to inform the world of their attributes. So why start Terrierman.com, a site on those American working canines? Why write a book on the subject, offer pet care tips? Why create a blog? As he describes in a Q&A below, it's because dogs see the world through different lenses and the partnership between dogs and humans is important and influential. Read Patrick's responses below. |

Of course they do!
When it’s the right kind of attention. If we have a cat who seems shy, who hides, or avoids human contact, we have a cat who is not sure about the attention they might get. It’s the happy and confident cat who is always there, eager to share their presence with us, and secure with the kind of reception they will get. It can seem that our cats are always asking for attention. This means two things; that it’s not so bad that cats nap so much, and that they are happy cats who love us. That should help. These are cats who have discovered the thrill of engagement, and want to play with it like a toy. RJ has been exploring his new abilities in this area, and is busy coming up with things to ask us for. Just because it’s so thrilling! It’s ironic that people who don’t understand cats denigrate these very abilities. Cats who have a close bond with us get the same enjoyment from our interaction that we get from a smile from a friend. They want us to acknowledge them, say their name, and comment on what they are doing. When it comes to their needs, cats are never wrong. |

Questionable Authority?

It seems Mike Dunford might think his authority is questionable. Hence, his blog of the same name: The Questionable Authority.
We beg to differ. When asked all types zoology questions in a Paw-Talk, Mike was quick to showcase his expertise. And why not? After he was a graduate student in the Department of Zoology at the University of Hawaii, Manoa. He's also a contributor to the great blog The Panda's Thumb (which also regularly features animals, interview with the head guy there coming soon,) and he writes tons of posts on animals related to evolution. An added bonus: Mike and his family are animal rescuers. Current pets include they have a rescued border collie, a cat that came in from a rainstorm, and the daughter of another cat that followed his kids home from the playground. So why not interview Mike Dunford. He's no longer the Questionable Authority to us. His authority is certain. |
The kids are back in school, the nights are growing longer and even here in California an unmistakable chill lingers in the air. A summer packed with amazing animal stories has officially come to an end. Wildlife news tends to get pushed to the back page during the frenetic fall-to-spring news cycle, with that in mind we’ll look back at some of the most unusual creature features that made the headlines this summer:

Born Free

You could say it was their destiny. As the UK's Born Free Foundation CEO and Born Free USA President Will Travers tells it, he always admired the Animal Protection Institute and when the opportunity came to have a closer relationship with the group, Will, along with the entire Born Free foundation jumped full force into the unknown--and has been admonishing the successes in animal conservation every since.
The Born Free Foundation was first founded in England by Will Travers and Virginia McKenna, while having been influenced by their time in Kenya. Initially, they did it in lieu of the untimely death of an elephant named Pole Pole, but soon realized that much more needed to be done in light of wildlife conservation and animal protection. And so they pushed full steam ahead with a sister organization in the US and subsequent coming together with the Animal Protection Institute. Now Born Free USA is one of the leading animal advocacy and wildlife conservation organizations in the country. Let its CEO, president, and leader tell you why! |
