“The Cetacea hold an important lesson for us. The lesson is not about whales and dolphins, but about ourselves. There is at least moderately convincing evidence that there is another class of intelligent beings on Earth beside ourselves. They have behaved benignly and in many cases affectionately towards us. We have systematically slaughtered them. Little reverence for life is evident in the whaling industry - underscoring a deep human failing...In warfare, man against man, it is common for each side to dehumanize the other so that there will be none of the natural misgivings that a human being has at slaughtering another..."

I have been writing a blog for over a year now over at Eye of the Dolphin focusing mainly on marine mammal and ocean conservation issues. I’m no expert nor claim to be one. I am simply someone who is passionate about our oceans and our friends that inhabit our seas the world over.
Dolphins are a popular mammal to love because of their seemingly free spirited and playful mannerisms. I admit that is what attracted me to them in the first place. But it’s more than that for me personally. Whales and dolphins move me in a spiritual way, for lack of a better way of explaining it. There is something pure, joyful, and loving about the energies of these mammals that move me to the core of my soul.
In a world that’s fraught with wars, dissension, etc., I find my peace via our ocean friends. They remind me that there is a beautiful and loving side to life and that not everyone is focused on destroying our planet. It saddens me deeply that there appears to be so much apathy concerning preserving not just our oceans, but all the marine life that make the ocean their home.
I did not choose to become a voice for our marine friends but rather, I believe they chose me. I don’t know when it started or how. I simply decided one day that I since I enjoy writing so much, why not combine my passion for writing with my passion for our dolphin and whale ambassadors?
Yes, I said ambassadors. I believe our marine friends have a message for all of us, if we’d just quiet our minds and hearts and truly listen. I believe our marine friends are another classification of intelligent beings on this earth who have just as much of a right, if not more so, than us humans to be here. And I believe that if we follow the true messages of our dolphin and whale friends, we could truly create a better and more peaceful world.
As corny as that may sound, I truly do believe that they are messengers from another dimension; to remind us to take some time out every day to play, to appreciate the simple things in life, and to nurture our souls.
We each have something in our lives that inspire us, make us smile, or bring us inner peace. For me, it’s our marine friends. Without them, and without our oceans, our planet would be a much less beautiful and soulless place to be.
