The Whitecaps started mostly the same lineup they will use in the season

VANCOUVER - The Vancouver Whitecaps learned another hard lesson in their final exhibition game before the team begins its inaugural Major League Soccer season. Dustin Keller Jersey . The Whitecaps held their own for most of Saturdays match against the defending league champion Colorado Rapids. Vancouver missed on some early scoring chances, then a defensive break down late in the game resulted in Colorado scoring a 1-0 victory. "In the end we lost the game on a little mistake," said coach Teitur Thordarson. "Thats what we cant have at this level. "You get punished for that if you make mistakes." Midfielder Terry Dunfield, who missed on a great scoring chance in the second half, said the match was a snap shot of the Whitecaps exhibition season. "In games we have been good for 45 minutes," said Dunfield. "The game is 90 minutes and we have to see it right through." The game was Vancouvers only exhibition match at home. The Whitecaps will play their first MLS regular-season game next Saturday against Canadian rival Toronto FC. Thordarson said what hurt the Whitecaps most was failing to capitalize on their scoring chances. "We had some very big chances today," said Thordarson. "I feel we should have scored at least two goals and we didnt manage that. "If you dont manage to score those goals the risk is you get one behind." The Rapids used some solid ball movement to set up Jamie Smiths goal in the 79th minute. Midfielder Sanna Nyassi was the catalyst. He drove the ball past the Whitecaps defence, then sent a pretty pass back to Smith, who blasted a shot past goalkeeper Joe Cannon. The goal came after Thordarson had substituted Jeb Brovsky at left back for starter Alain Rochat. "We did a lot of changes in the last 25 minutes," said Thordarson. "That disrupted the shape a little bit. "We have a lot of good young players but they havent been on this level before. They need a bit of time to adjust." The loss dropped Vancouvers record to two wins, five losses and a draw in exhibition games against MLS opponents. Colorado is 3-2-1. The Rapids seemed to gain strength as the game progressed, moving the ball with short, crisp passes that kept the Whitecaps chasing. Vancouvers best scoring chance came in the 55th minute. Midfielder Russell Teibert carried the ball down the side, then sent a pass across the front of the net. A charging Dunfield had a gapping net but fired the ball high, over the crossbar. "I have to do better," said Dunfield. "Thats probably a game-changer if I score." Rochat made a pretty play in the 64th minute to keep the score 0-0. Colorados Brian Mullan pounced on a turnover and was heading toward the Whitecap net before Rochat slid at his feet and knocked the ball away. Striker Eric Hassli, who the Whitecaps recently signed as the teams first designated player, saw his first game action since arriving in Vancouver this week. The tall, wide-bodied Hassli, who played in the Swiss Super League the last 3 1/2 seasons, moved easily for a big man. Early in the first half he showed his pace and smooth touch. He easily stepped around a Colorado defender, then fired a hard shot that just went wide. "I felt good with a new team," Hassli said, who played the first half. "I will be ready for next week." The Whitecaps started mostly the same lineup they will use in the season opener. Captain Jay DeMerit sat out with a nagging groin injury while midfielder/forward Davide Chiumiento is still nursing a sore ankle. Thordarson expects DeMerit to be ready for next weeks game. Cannon replaced starting goalkeeper Jay Nolly to start the second half. He was tested early, diving to the ground to stop a blast from Colorado forward Omar Cummings. An invitation only crowd of around 2,000 watched the match on a cold afternoon

who won at Richmond for the second

RICHMOND, Va. Womens Patrick Peterson Jersey . -- Denny Hamlin was the popular pre-season pick to win his first NASCAR championships. He snapped a month-long slump just in time to move to the top of the Chase for the Sprint Cup standings. Hamlin dominated Saturday night at home track, winning the final race of the "regular season" for the second consecutive year. Like last year at Richmond International Raceway, he hoped to take that momentum into the 10-race Chase, which begins next week at New Hampshire. But this time **** be prepared for the twists and turns that come from trying to dethrone four-time defending champion Jimmie Johnson. "At this point now, the confidence level is pretty high," Hamlin said. The win was the series-best sixth of the season for Hamlin, who broke a tie with Johnson for the top seed in the Chase. And it completes a last-to-first turnaround: he dominated early last week at Atlanta but finished last when his engine failed. He leaves Richmond with the points lead for the first time in his career, and will start the Chase with a 10-point advantage over Johnson. "I hope you guys are ready for a good 10 weeks," Hamlin radioed his crew. "We could have had two wins in a row going into the Chase, but last week is in the past and right now I just feel really confident in the team." Regular-season points leader Kevin Harvick took the third seed, 30 points behind Hamlin. Kyle Busch, also 30 behind Hamlin, is the fourth seed. He chased down Hamlin, his Joe Gibbs Racing teammate, over the final 40 laps but didnt have enough to pass him and settled for second in giving Toyota and JGR a 1-2 finish. Kurt Busch, winner of the inaugural 2004 Chase, is the fifth seed, followed by Tony Stewart and Greg Biffle, who secured his spot in the 12-driver field just 30 laps into Saturday night when start-and-park driver Jason Leffler called it a night. Biffle was guaranteed a spot in the Chase by finishing 42nd or better. He wound up 32nd. "We knew we were going to qualify for the Chase, but we felt we would run a little better than that. That was pretty poor," Biffle said. "Our cars keep breaking and we seem to have stuff wrong with them." Jeff Gordon will be seeded eighth, the first of five drivers winless this season who will start the Chase 60 points behind Hamlin. Clint Bowyer was the only real driver on the "bubble" at the start of Saturday night, but had a stout car, led 33 laps and finished sixth to grab the final Chase spot. "As happy as I am to make the Chase, I was frustrated with the finish," Bowyer said. "We were a second-place car and made an attempt to pass Denny a couple of times and slipped clear to sixth." But Bowyer never had to worry in a race that lacked the drama of previous years. As the final race of the "regular season," Richmond has packed a punch since the Chase began in 2004 as a handful of drivers typically vied for one or two spots in the championship field. Jeremy Mayfield won Richmond that first year to grab the final spot, and every season since has been full of storylines of who made it and who missed. Not so much this year, as Bowyer took a 117-point lead into Saturday night and needed only to avoid catastrophe to earn the last spot in the field. "All they had to do is fire the thing up tonight and not have a meltdown," Harvick said of Bowyers effort at Richmond. So the attention was instead on the 10 drivers who had already clinched their spots and what measures theyd take to grab the final 10 bonus points before the Chase. In the end, though, nobody had anything for Hamlin, who won at Richmond for the second consecutive year. Last years win pushed him thick into the championship hunt, and he hung with Johnson for the first few weeks until a mix of mechanical problems and mental lapses took him out of contention. This year, hes hoping to ride the momentum to his first career championship. Johnson knows Hamlin is lurking. "Maybe I took for granted how well Denny ran last year

The UN General Assembly and the G20 in Pittsburgh marked a new era. Stewart Bradley Jersey . At both meetings, President Hu Jintao presented Chinas climate policy and put it in a global context with a clear and much-needed message that global collaboration is necessary. Over the last weeks trade has emerged as a major challenge in global climate negotiations. Countries like the US and France have started discussing ways to impose tax on imported products that have been made using a lot of CO2. Even though not explicit, it shows that China is one of their main targets. This trend is dangerous and can easily result in protectionism and trade wars. It is therefore important to explore possible ways forward that link trade and reduced CO2 emissions in a way that they support each other. China has a great opportunity to turn this potential conflict into increased cooperation. Building on the collaboration message, China has an opportunity to present concrete suggestions for low-carbon development. Related readings: Key hi-tech firms get certificates for carbon footprints China on track of low-carbon development Carbon trading set to rewrite eco-rulebook China builds a low-carbon future The biggest problem with the current discussion is probably not the possibility of a trade war in itself, even if that would be a serious problem, it is the fact that the current discussions have focused on conflicts and problems. What is needed instead is collaboration and focus on solutions. The current approach of countries such as the US and France is based on two assumptions. First, that the focus should be on reducing emissions from the big polluting companies that are creating the problem. Second, that countries should try to reduce their own emissions as little as possible and get others to reduce as much as possible without collaboration. Both should be challenged, and the government and companies in China can play an important role here. The problem approach with focus on the big emitters has dominated global climate negotiations since the Kyoto Protocol. It is time to move away from a situation where all counties are trying to protect their dirty industries. China could help to shift the focus from big emitters to also include the new solutions providers. With companies such as Suntech, Himin Group, China Mobile and Broad, China is well positioned to make the case for policies that support solutions, not just try to reduce the problems. Instead of a focus on how to deal with carbon intensive trade we could have a discussion on how export of low-carbon solutions should be encouraged. A solution initiative could include incentives to support global trade that would enable the worlds cities to build buildings that are net producers of renewable energy, and support an accelerated uptake of electric cars that in turn are supported by renewable energy and other solutions, which help reduce the need for fossil fuels. A special focus should be given to transformative solutions that can help reduce emissions by 90 percent or more, such as teleworking, smart grids, smart buildings and e-paper. China could propose initiatives to encourage trade and investment in low-carbon solutions. China could also suggest that a system is created where solutions-providing companies can report their contribution to reduced emission through their products and services. Today, the focus is on how much polluting companies are emitting, but in the future the focus should shift to how much the solutions-providing companies are helping reduce emissions. The second assumption is that negotiations should continue to only focus on individual countries and how they can reduce their emissions. This approach is problematic from two perspectives. First, because it undermines smart collaboration and second because it ignores the fact that the most important question is how we can provide low-carbon lifestyles. The solutions that are needed must be developed through international collaboration, and countries, companies, universities and cities must come together to solve the climate crisis. It is important to remember that the main problem is the high-carbon lifestyles in Western counties. What the world needs is solutions that can provide a high quality of life with low emissions

Gonzalez sliced a flyball into the Monster seats to make it 4-0. The Braves

Posted 08-21-2012 at 10:10 PM by tibby000
BOSTON -- Kevin Youkilis farewell at Fenway Park on Sunday even was moving for Cody Ross, one of the newest members of the Red Sox. Roddy White Jerseys . On the day Youkilis 8 1/2 years in Boston came to an end, Ross hit two homers and drove in five runs to lift the Red Sox to a 9-4 win over the Atlanta Braves. Youkilis was traded to the Chicago White Sox for utilityman Brent Lillibridge and right-hander Zach Stewart after the game. "It brought a tear to my eye, thats for sure," said Ross, in his first season with Boston. "To see him run off and tip his hat, he had some tears in his eyes, I got goosebumps. Special time. I know how much he means to this city. He won two World Series here, played his heart and soul out every day and just a great teammate. **** be missed." Before leaving the Red Sox for good,Youkilis was lifted for a pinch-runner after hitting a triple in the seventh inning. Youkilis was greeted with a hug near the first base line from Nick Punto, who pinch-ran for him, and many of his teammates as he came to the top step of the dugout. The burely Youkilis was then urged to come out for a curtain call by his teammates, coaches and manager Bobby Valentine before heading down the steps. He was given a lengthy standing ovation and the fans chanted "Yook." The entire dugout looked empty, with everyone standing on the top step and applauding Youkilis. Valentine thought it was a fitting sendoff. "It ended the right way," he said. "It was the longest run to the dugout. ... I told the players what I was going to do and he did the rest." The nameplate above Youkilis locker was gone when the clubhouse door opened and there was a lineup card there after the Red Soxs the ninth win in 11 games. The day started with players kids running around the clubhouse on Family Day. About an hour after the game, many of the players were on the field wearing their jerseys with their wives and children. "Weve been friends a long time -- 10 years," Punto said. "It was kind of a goodbye." Youkilis was part of the 2004 and 07 championships. "Its tough because I know how hard hes played and hes given everything he has in every game hes every put on the Red Sox uniform. Sad," said second baseman Dustin Pedroia, a teammate of Youkilis since 2007. Boston completed interleague play with a winning record for the eighth straight season (11-7). Jason Heyward continued his torrid June for the Braves, hitting a solo homer among his three hits. Atlanta, which lost for the ninth time in 13 games, closed interleague play 8-10. The Braves lost two of three to the Red Sox after taking two of three against the Yankees in New York. "We were .500 against the American League East on the road," said Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez. "You always like to get a little greedy. We had an opportunity to win two out of three here and we just couldnt convert it." Aaron Cook (1-1), making just his second start with the Red Sox and first since going on the disabled list May 6 after sustaining a cut on his left knee covering home plate, gave up three runs -- two earned -- six hits and didnt walk or strike out anyone in five innings. Braves starter Mike Minor (3-6) gave up three homers and allowed seven runs -- four earned -- in 4 2-3 innings. "Just really basically is what it boils down to is I couldnt throw a fastball for a strike on the inner half today," Minor said. Adrian Gonzalez added a solo homer for Boston, which won six of seven series against NL opponents. Heyward is hitting .391 this month with five homers and 12 RBIs. Cook filled-in for Clay Buchholz, who was placed on the 15-day disabled list Sunday with what Valentine called a "gastrointestinal issue." The Red Sox jumped ahead with a four-run fourth against Minor. After breezing through the first three innings allowing just a pair of singles, Minor walked the first two batters in the inning. Ross then homered into the first row of seats above the Green Monster, making it 3-0. One pitch later, Gonzalez sliced a flyball into the Monster seats to make it 4-0. The Braves capitalized on Cooks throwing error for a run during a three-run fifth. Eric Hinske had a two-run double into the centre field triangle after Heyward and Andrelton Simmons singled. Juan Francisco then bounced back to the mound and Cook had Hinske off the bag, but threw widely past third to allow him to score to make it 4-3. Cook retired the next three batters, finishing his work. In the fifth,
