If you paid the extra fee and have documentation that states that they had already neutered the cat - they most certainly should neuter him at no extra charge! I would most definitely do that at my shelter. We basically charge the cost of what the spay or neuter was for us so it isn't like they will be losing any money. Right now it sounds like they gained some extra for you. If they give you a hard time I would make a BIG stink about it, especially if it states on your adoption contract that this kitty was already neutered.

I went over the paper work last night and the medical records actually state he was neutered and the date was given. I'll have to bring him to the vet first to make sure. I could be wrong - I am a new cat owner, and my first one is a female. He is due for his shots soon anyway.

Thanks again for all the helpful information.

I wish I had found this board when I first got them. I could have used your expertise.

I'll try to post pictures of my furbabies today.

If he is whole it sounds like a poor neuter job was done.

This happens in horses as well and if the cord is not also removed the sperm can develope. In horses the difference is that a rig ( improperly castrated horse) is dangerous.

On the subject of early spays/neuters... I went to check on my little baby today, he is recovering from a broke leg. While I was at the SPCA I saw a kitten bout 8 weeks that had been spayed. I nearly fainted. The whole tummy was full of stitches...she looked so pathetic! I understand why they neuter at this age, but I think I could never get it over my heart to do that to my babies (I have three 3 & 1/2 mnth old kittens) until they are a little bigger. I would just die to have them looking that torn up. But then again, my three kittens were a case in point for early neutering : The mother cat was a stray I had rescued, and due to malnutrition defied my attempts to guess her age. She looked 4 months old. She was in fact closer to 6. Had I "early" spayed her, I would not have three little ones extra to care for now. In my posts online, I advise owners to have their kittens assesed for de-sexing from 4 months ( call it a routine check up and just ask the vet if he thinks the cat is ready) to prevent any mishaps like mine. It is not unknown , especially for strays and ferals, to be sexually mature at 4 months.
