Campaign for Free Spaying and Neutering Launched

United Pet Way (UPW) recently launched a campaign to have every publicly funded
animal shelter in the United States provide free spaying and neutering for cats and dogs.
In order to prompt the various legislators that would have to provide funding for the spaying and neutering to do so, UPW is requesting that individuals in each of the 50 states "sign" an online petition.

The idea for the campaign came from a no-cost spaying and neutering program started by the government of Miami-Dade County in Florida in 2001.
The program is implemented by Miami-Dade County Animal Services with the assistance of local veterinarians, and funded by private donors, dog license sales, the charging of adoption and other fees by Animal Services and the imposition of fines on violators of
animal cruelty laws.
"The reduction in cat and dog homelessness would be tremendous," said Bob Ragone, who rescues stray animals in San Francisco, CA. "In addition, the expenses incurred by providing the free spaying and neutering would be offset by reduced shelter and euthanasia expenditures."
