Getting a kitty!!

I'm going to be getting a kitty in the near future!! I'm so happy right now! I finally talked my dad into letting me get a kitten. It will be my first cat in 6 years! Is there anything I can do to make him/her more comfortable in his/her new home and on the car ride home? Any information would be GREAT!

Thanks in advance,

Cassilynne~

Hi! thats great! for taking it home i would put a blanket or towel in the pet taxi and then cover it, it will probably be scared. Personally if its a cat that really likes to be held you could wrap it up in a towel so just its head sticks out and hold it the way home if its not so far.

when you get home let it out in one closed room with the litter box and food and water and bed so s/he can just come out when s/he wants and is comfortable

I have a medium dog crate... is that okay? And for the room... is it okay if I let s/he out in MY room? Should I worry about s/he hiding under my bed? Other then that... my room has nothing in it

Thank you very much for the info!!

I agree with Kendalle. I think your existing crate would be okay; I'm all for using what's on hand. As long as there's something soft in there to cuddle into...I use a piece of fleece, it should be cozy. My cats still like it under the bed. Dark, secure places are appealing. I think that would be a normal reaction. Watch the bottom though, some cats have a tendency to rip up the mesh-y part covering the box springs. How big is your bedroom? Cats don't like to eat/drink and use the litterbox in the same space, so try to keep those items as far apart as possible.

I love kittes - can't wait to see pictures!

oo about the litterbox and food i ment for the first few days (1 or 2 until s/hes not scared anymore) your room will be fine, later on id move the litter box to the bathroom or something if that works well for your family and you. you could even put in a stuffed animal or something in the box with her to snuggle up with

or if your dog create is big enough and you got a kitty bed for her maybe shed like that in there, but id use something washible because some cats get car sick..

My bedroom isnt that big.. but not to small, if you know what I mean ... So I'm not all that worried about it. I'll make sure I put some nice soft blankies in with the new addition!! Thanks for the info. I'll have the food/water on one side, and the litter box on the other .

Do any of ya'll have suggestions on food, toys, ect I should buy?

Thanks so much everyone! Great info.

yea that would be fine, litter kinda sucks in carpet is all i was thinkin about, but with the vacuum... its all good.

Walmart sells cat toys for 88 cents, our cat likes them pretty good. you can also get them a bed (like a soft foam box) and things, cats go crazy for catnip so catnip toys are always fun. our cat likes pop tops, pen caps, plastic bags, and other things he finds around the house... and loves ping pong balls! my other cat used to carry around doll clothes and socks. if your new cat isnt declawed its a good idea to get a clawing post, pad thing.

My kittens didn't care for catnip until they were about 7 months old and they LOVE ping pong balls too. I bought them bright orange ones, lol.

When I first got my kittens, they missed their mom and brothers so I tried something I heard worked to keep them calm. A ticking clock. I guess it reminds them of their moms beating heart or something like that. Anyway, I wrapped a ticking clock in a soft cloth and the kittens loved it. Once they got used to me and their new home I took it away.

PS. You better show pics of your new kitten once you bring him/her home!

oo and a great thing to get is a litter matt, its rubber and catches the litter stuck in their toes instead of tracking it all threw the house

I bought one of those and the litter still gets tracked everywhere. Maybe I didn't get a very good one. Or maybe they just have extra sticky feet, lol.
