Question

Help! Littertraining...

How do you littertrain a kitten? I put a small kitten size pan down for them but they still don't use it and neither does their mother. These babies are supposed to be leaving in a week and they still aren't using the litterbox, what do I do???

Try putting the kittens in the box, and with your hand, MAKE them dig around in the litter. That's all I did with our kittens..

As for mom, unless she's using it, the kittens may not.. but try that, and if they start, mom may too.

Also try a BIG box so they can all go in it.

Has mom seen a vet? If she's not using a box, she could have a urinary infection (mine stopped using the box, and some meds and diet change helped him immediately)!

Mom's a porch/outdoor kitty(she only goes in our yard though. She comes and goes as she pleases which is why she doesn't use the box. We started taking care of her several months ago when she moved herself onto our porch but one of our indoor kitties doesn't like her so she stays on the porch.

its not necessarily your job to train the kittens before they are adopted, I wouldn't worry about it

If you add a little bit of used litter from your indoor cat to the box, that might help them get the scent of that's where they are supposed to go. I did that with all the kittens I had to litter train.

Also from personal experence they do not like the cat pans with the tops on them. Kittens like a clean pan, and low enough for them to get into it. I started them early. As soon as they started to stumble walk out of the box, they seen the litter box for the first time. Altho they never used it, they knew of it.

And as soon as they started eating soft foods they learned about needing to use the bath room, so as soon as I seen them circling and mewing, I knew they needed to go so into the litter box they went. SOME are harder than others as you may need to be after them all the time as their mother will not put them into a litter box. Oh I wish they would, it would make it a lot easier.

Good luck

shut everyone in a small room or a dog crate they will learn to go into the pan faster than you think.

Not necessarily, I tried that before and it never worked at all. My kittens would make a point to go next to the box and not in it. Plus kittens and cat a lot of times refuse to use the box if it is dirty, like my cats, if I was to leave it a few days, they remind me by pooing out of the box!! Kittens & Cats are stubborn like that!!

I guess for a couple of days you have to keep putting the kitten in the box and I like the idea that Muzby had to help the kitten scratch.
