Limping Cat

I have a 14 year old male cat who began limping several weeks ago. It got worse, so I took him to the vet, who did x-rays. No arthritis, no hip displacia, no fractures, dislocations, or tumors. The vet said he can only guess, then, that it's some sort of nerve pain. Prednisone is not helping. He still wants to be in my lap and get petted, but is now eating very little, though he's still drinking his water. Anybody have any ideas?
