Recognizing Feline Hyperthyroidism

Recognizing Feline Hyperthyroidism

by Dr. Mark Silvers, DVM

The family's 12-year-old, once modestly overweight cat has become little more than skin and bones over the past few months. What has everyone baffled is that the cat is eating more now than ever before. In fact, "Fluffy" wants to eat all the time! She literally begs for food most of the day.

If this all-too-common scenario sounds like your older feline friend, he or she may be suffering from a condition known as hyperthyroidism, a disease that affects many of our aging pet cats. While hyperthyroidism is now the most commonly diagnosed endocrine disease of the cat, up until 1980, there was not even mention of it in the veterinary literature.

Oh my gosh - Christi - thank you for this information!

I have an old cat who is exhibiting those exact symptoms - my vet chalked it up to old age! She is thin- she begs for food and will eat the strangest things from our plates! Last night she ran off with my turkey sandwich! Literally hooked it in her paw while I wasn't looking and I found her glomming it down on the floor as she tried to drag it away!

I am definately going to push for a blood test and thourough exam.

Thanks!!
