Recognizing Feline Hyperthyroidism

The family's 12-year-old, once modestly overweight cat has become little more than skin and bones over the past few months. What has everyone baffled is that the cat is eating more now than ever before. In fact, "Fluffy" wants to eat all the time! She literally begs for food most of the day.
If this all-too-common scenario sounds like your older feline friend, he or she may be suffering from a condition known as hyperthyroidism, a disease that affects many of our aging pet cats. While hyperthyroidism is now the most commonly diagnosed endocrine disease of the cat, up until 1980, there was not even mention of it in the veterinary literature.
