Here are some good sites to check out about food. I'm always more comfortable seeing claims about something causing something else if there are sources that verify those claims.

"catinfo dot org" for DVM Lisa Pierson's site about Feeding Your Cat: The Basics of Nutrition. This vet has so much information that is very helpful and reliable with reliable sources. As time and your brain absorption works (I still havent absorbed everything on her site and I started reading it a long time ago!) look at all the links and see how the info works in your lifestyle and belief system.

bornfreeusa dot org is another. I just found this site and it's interesting. Also has some good links, e.g., to Michelle Bernard (Benard?)'s site and books.

Hope this helps you all.

Agreed. I haven't been to the second link, but the first one is awesome.

Just to kind of toss in my two cents worth. I have 3 cats, 2 Maine Coon, and a DSH Tiger. My vet reccomended that I start using Royal Canin Maine Coon diet, well Orson (Oby) started to get sores on his gums/mouth. So Dr Fry told me to switch to Wilderness Diet (sold at Petco) but he started getting the mouth sores again. So we tried canned diet, but he just licks off the gravy and leaves the "meat" for the other cats. So now even though it's not the best for him we feed them Iams/Meow Mix mixture, because he has an issue with foods that contain alot of meat proteins. So essentilly, my cat ends up eating "junk food" every day, but we haven't had the issue with the mouth sores anymore. My other cat really liked the Royal Canin Diet, but Oby had to be a stinker about it!

Oby now weighs 18lbs at 4 years old, he has one year yet to grow (he's not overweight it's his breed) His father was 20lbs. Lillian is at her full weight (I hope) at 16lbs. Kai is gaining weight like Fat Albert at an ice cream shoppe, so who knows how big she'll get!

Royal Canin is bullsh*t. Different breeds do not need a special formula. That's a marketing technique certain pet companies use. But it's completely unnecessary.

Kibble is hard for cats and dogs to eat. It hurts their mouths if they don't swallow the pieces whole. What kind of canned food is it? Meat chunks, or pre-digested meat, as I like to call it?

LMAO uhmm ewwww! It was Merrick Canned food, they particularly liked the Turducken Flavor. I believe the draw with the Royal Cannin was the larger kibble for the Maine Coon breed (or so I assumed).

Yeah... it's not uncommon for cats to dislike the pre-digested meat canned foods. I have to feed one of my cats dry food, because there's not many good pet food companies out there that manufacture meat chunk canned food, but I pour water into her kibble so it's easier for her to eat.

Who knows what Royal Canin's idea behind it was, :/ They used no scientific research behind it, it was just, "Hey, Maine Coons are large! Let's do this! "

It's like companies who manufacture "duck-flavored" foods as "Allergen" free. The only reason they're "allergen sensitive" is because it's not a common protein source used in cat or dog foods. The only reason it's good for cats with allergies, is because it's a different meat protein, period. The same protein = allergies for many cats.

But...such is the world of the pet food industry. Full of lies and scandal, :/

....It IS pre-digested meat, though. Lol. It looks like some other animal chewed up the meat, regurgitated it, and the pet food company plopped it into a can, x_X

MmMmMmm....tasty! Oby is such a big baby, he won't eat the crumbles, and Kai well...she just eats. Lilian is just like Oby, she won't eat the crumbles, but then she won't eat the food shaped like "X" either, just her thing. They really like the Whiska's food with the "cream" filling, I think it's nasty, and it makes their litterbox smell like an over used outhouse! And we have the self cleaning one!

Tweedle, Often mouth sores are caused by plastic. Are you using either ceramic or stainless dishes for feeding? Just a thought.
