Description 2 1/4-2 7/8" (57-73 mm). Wings rounded, with HW markedly scalloped and FW less so. Above,
dark brown with small white dots near FW tip; prominent russet-red band around HW margin may cover a third of wing. Below, similar except lighter brown; HW band maroon with white and brown-violet mottling, and vague eyespots on inner edge; margin has soft blue markings.
Similar Species Red-eyed Wood Nymph has russet on FW rather than HW. Crimson-banded Black has similar pattern but is black and crimson, not brown and russet.
Life Cycle Unreported.
Flight 1 brood in Arizona; August-October.
Habitat Pine forests and canyons.
Range Central Arizona south to Mexico.
Discussion The Red-bordered Satyr, unique in North America, represents a group of butterflies which have a stronghold in the Andes Mountains of South America. Known as pronophiline satyrs, many have been discovered only recently.
