"Spread Winged Skippers" Acacia Skipper

Description 1 1/2-1 7/8" (38-48 mm). Long, triangular wings. Brown with conspicuous white spots on FW above and below; HW gray-brown beneath crossed by zigzag bands of brown. FW fringes checkered, HW fringes conspicuously white. Violet cast beneath.

Similar Species Others in genus very similar.

Life Cycle Unrecorded. Caterpillar feeds on acacias (Acacia angustissima) in Texas.

Flight 2 or more broods; April-September.

Habitat Acacia thorn scrub and hilly drylands.

Range Arizona, New Mexico, and W. Texas through Baja California and Mexico to N. South America.

Discussion The Acacia Skipper may be numerous around its host plant as well as some distance away at other favorable nectar sources. A good place to look for it is Olmost Park Bird Sanctuary in San Antonio, Texas.
