Codatractus arizonensis
Description 1 5/8-2 1/4" (41-57 mm). Large; long-winged, mostly blackish-brown.
Dark brown above with tawny-brown hair over FW base, much of HW, and on body; large, square, milk-
white spots (sometimes bluish) cross FW in median band and continue sparsely out toward tip. Below FW similar to upperside, with some purplish scaling; HW mostly purplish-brown, crossed by dark brown bands. Fringe buff and dark.
Similar Species Araxes Skipper has broader wings, orange-washed below.
Life Cycle Unknown.
Flight Several broods in U.S.; April-October.
Habitat Canyons, desert edges, and dry woods.
Range SE. Arizona, SW. New Mexico, W. Texas south to S. Mexico.
Discussion In the Southwest, this species is often confused with the chiefly Mexican Melon Skipper (C. melon), which can only be distinguished by experts.
