Brown Longtail
Urbanus procne
Description 1 5/8-1 7/8" (41-48 mm). Long wings, long tails. Normally unmarked brown above, sometimes with a poorly developed white line across FW. Tan below, white line present or absent but seldom prominent; 2 brown spot bands across HW, the basal band not reaching the outermost of 2 brown spots on costa. Fringes buff, uncheckered.
Similar Species Teleus Longtail has narrow white band across FW. Other longtails have yellow or amber spot bands across FW above and some white on HW below.
Life Cycle Early stages undescribed. Caterpillar feeds on grasses (Poaceae), including Bermuda grass (Cynodon dactylon). Before pupating, caterpillar weaves grass litter and silk to make shelter.
Flight 3 or more broods in Texas; year-round, most common March-October.
Habitat Banks of old watercourses and irrigation canals in Texas.
Range S. Texas, perhaps Arizona, south to Argentina.
Discussion Nearly all of the Pyrginae use plants with 2 seed leaves (dicots) as their
host plants. But the caterpillar of the Brown Longtail feeds on grasses and is an interesting exception
