Falcate Skipper
Spathilepia clonius
Description 1 5/8-1 3/4" (41-44 mm). Extremely distinctive with FW curved outward and nipped off squarely. Above and below, brown-black with very dark FW crossed by prominent white band of spots; slightly scalloped margins; dark checkered fringes.
Life Cycle Caterpillar yellow; bears brown network on back.
Host plants are a member of the mimosa family (Inga edulis) and wild beans (Phaseolus). Chrysalis stubby, tan, covered with sheath of waxy, white, powdery spikes.
Flight May and November in Texas.
Habitat Open spaces near towns.
Range S. Texas south to Argentina.
Discussion The Falcate Skipper is not uncommon throughout much of the American Tropics but it rarely wanders to Texas.
