Florida Duskywing
Ephyriades brunneus
Description 1 1/4-1 5/8" (32-41 mm). Fairly large, with long wings. Above, male mostly brown with inner half dark chocolate-brown; female violet-brown with 3
dark brown bands across wings alternating with lavender bands. Both sexes have glassy, white or greenish-
white spots on FW, more numerous and larger in female. Below, similar but more subdued.
Life Cycle Caterpillar yellow-green with 2 yellowish stripes and 1 gray stripe along each side; feeds on Barbados cherry (Malphighia glabra) in Florida. Chrysalis stout, pale green.
Flight Overlapping broods; year-round.
Habitat Gardens and open spaces.
Range S. Florida, Keys, and West Indies.
Discussion Not really a duskywing, this species nevertheless bears a striking similarity and close relationship to that group.
