Description 1 3/4-2 1/4" (44-57 mm). Large with long wings. Brown, with understated darker spots; female has small cluster of glassy spots near FW tip. Below, lighter, with more diffuse markings. Antennae bent back like shepherd's cook; palpi bright orange below; underside of abdomen buff with dark midline.
Life Cycle Unrecorded.
Flight August-September.
Habitat Woods, thickets, and savannah.
Range S. Texas to Argentina; also Jamaica. Wandering occasionally to N. Texas.
[b]Discussionp/b] The Hermit and the Brown-banded Skipper populate southern Texas in autumn, when the parched countryside finds many other butterflies between broods. The Hermit is named for its behavior: seeking protection or perhaps shade, it crawls beneath large leaves.
