Hoary Skipper
Carrhenes canescens
Description 1 1/8-1 3/8 " (28-35 mm). Above, dust-brown to smoke-gray, somewhat browner on HW, crossed by several rows of darker lines and partial pale bands and submarginal row of brown, blurry chevrons; 8 or 9 small glassy
white spots, more of less pronounced, form 2 broken, crooked rows from costa to middle of HW. Below, lighter buff with 5 dark concentric rows of darker scales.
Similar Species Duskywings larger, darker with fewer glassy spots.
Life Cycle Unknown.
Flight Early spring in Texas.
Habitat Subtropical woodland borders.
Range S. Texas south to Argentina.
Discussion Hoary Skippers rarely enter Texas, but may be more common than has previously been thought.
