Giant White
Ganyra josephina
Description 2 1/2-2 7/8" (64-73 mm). Very large. Clear white above and below, with drawn-out wings and black spot at end of FW cell; female may have black along FW outer veins and additional black smudges; sometimes female has salmon shading above.
Similar Species Other big whites lack black cell spot.
Life Cycle Unreported.
Flight Probably most months.
Habitat Scrubby openings in Rio Grande Valley.
Range Resident in S. Texas, wandering into Arizona; south to Central America.
Discussion The name Giant White is appropriate to the largest of all North American whites. It is not well known in spite of its conspicuous dimensions because it is resident in this country only in the lower Rio Grande Valley of Texas.
