Question

crazy degu :S

hey there, i have had one degu fro around a week now - i work at pets at home and unfortunately her friend was stolen and she was left trapped between the spring door of the cage and the wall of the cage - i found her half dead

now as degus are meant to live in pairs she would have had to be sent back to the breeder and who knows what would have happened to i decided to adopt her!

now i know wat degus act like as i see them every day at work, but my tayles is crazy.... constantly squeaking and runing around, "popcorning".. i know they are closely related to guineapigs, but i actually think tht she thinks she is one!!

is this a normal behaviour? shes a loonatic! but extremely friendly and quiet when shes out of the cage!

oh and also, she seems to be itching a lot, yet she has access to sand baths every day for 30 mins.. her coat seems fine too.

any ideas??

Welcome to Paw-Talk!

Running around and squeaking? Just sounds like a young, playful degu to me .

Have you looked into getting her a buddy yet? Believe it or not, that might actually calm her down a bit and she'll have someone to run around with .

I'm not sure about the itching--what kind of bedding are you using?

They do scratch rather a lot as its a way of preening the coat, if her fur and skin looks ok just keep an eye on her She sounds like a typical degu to me too, you could get her a friend that might calm her down a bit

that sounds like what mine did after i got them, i have had them for about 1 and a half weeks now, but it used to be if i got anywere near them they would squeak REALLY loud. it took a while for them to get used to me, i gave them treats, stay in the room alot now their used to me. but i dont know about the not moving, mine love to run on the wheel, thats about all they do.

best to try find another young pup of the same sex.by the sounds she seems happy enough on ehr own, if you have plenty of spare time you can become her best friend, one of my girls Frack did not get along with all my other girls, so i had her on her own for over a year and she is brilliant, groomign me everytime i went near her, rolling over to get her belly scratched.i hooked her up with my male bobo nearly 3 months ago, and she's still has cute as ever. she's due next week sometime.im gonna keep all babies for company for when they have to be spearated again. he was always a more nervous degu than all my girls but since he's met frack she's really brought him out of his shell..
