Creating a digging pit?

This isn't something I considered before, and isn't even something I thought of. But I've now seen and heard it mentioned several times, so thought I'd see how you all make a digging pit for your goos.

Imana enjoys digging in the dust in her bath house, so I imagine she would also enjoy having a digging pit.

My question is how big should it be? What kind of soil should I put in it? And just generally any other general suggestions on making a nice digging pit. My thinking is I'll just give her access to it while she's out playing with me each day, or a few times a week, rather than putting it in her cage.

I also fear that the first thing she'll do is roll around in it and get dirty and disgusting. But, I suppose she could always just go take a dust bath after that.

yup she can always have a dust bath afterwards. i thought of it when i had my girls as well. i figured a glass fishbowl full of dirt or sand would work, like kids sandbox sterile sand? i dunno

Digging pits are great as they encourage natural behaviour

Size can be any you want it to be as long as its big enough for your degu to have a good dig. High sides are good as they can make quite a mess The soil needs to be a mixture of organic compost and chinchilla sand (usually a 60/40 mixture). I tend to add a little sand at a time and mix and then see how the consistency is and then if needs be add more sand, the mixture needs to be really soft as Degus are lazy when it comes to digging and prefer soft dry sand or they just can't be bothered The plus side of them prefering soft dry soil is that they don't really get all that dirty and usually have a good sand bath and wash afterwards anyway
