Degu Pics!

Meet my two degus, Lucious and Toffee. Here's a link with a few pictures of them dozing. There's some other critter pics, just look for the two pics with their names.

Cute pics! Mini Shark is beautiful! I didn't realize degus could be so calm. He looks so comfortable in the chair, he is all mushed into it.

Yes, the degus are normally VERY active, but if I hold them for a while, they will settle down and take a nap in my lap (or on the footstool, as you can see).

Hensonmom - Baby rats will be pretty active if they are healthy, so if they're active, that's a good sign. They're also be pretty timid towards you and your family at first, because they don't know you. Hold them, pet them, and offer them little treats (bits of cereal or bread) every day, and eventually they will learn that you only bring happiness to them and they will trust you. It will take some time and patience, but they will tame down.

That is so neat that you can handle your degus like that! I have tried to play with a friends pair and they just run away and hide... apparently their previous owner never paid them much attention. Those are great pics!!!

Do you have any hints on how to calm the degus down? I can not touch mine. I have had them about three weeks.

taming Degus

I think the best way to tame Your Degus would be to just sit quitely with your hand in their home, let them get use to you and see you are not going to hurt them, and of course tempt them with treats from your hand. I have mine a sunflower seed from my fingers. I got a quicker response from a wheat chex though. They loved that, couldn't resist it. If anyone else has any suggestions as to safe treats that are hard for Degus to resist please post it, being irresistable to our little buddies is the best part

I think my degus, like my chins are going to not want to be picked up. They will climb on my hand or up my arm, love getting treats but just do not want to be held onto. I have one who will follow my hand around to climb on it but if I try to pick it up it runs away.
