First off, welcome to Paw-Talk!

The best way to pick up a degu is to scoop them up rather than grab them. Make sure to support their bottoms. I find that holding them to my chest makes them feel more secure.

Yup, you don't want to ever hold the tail because they're tails can break off very easily and won't grow back. In fact, it's pretty painful for the degu.

By scoop them up, I mean put your hands under the degu and pick them up that way, cupping your hands.

getting them to crawl into a jar or something like that is another easy way of picking them up.

put some food in the end of the jar, put it on its side and just let them crawl into the jar, they can get used to being moved around, its just a suggestion, worked for me
