Question

i have no idea what im doing with my degus

i have 2 degu sisters that are 3 years old, but i got them may 28th. i have a few questions... ok, alot of questions
  • how do i get them to trust me?
  • what are their fave snacks
  • they fight over the wheel and usually the one whos trying to get on will disable the wheel (not that hard to do) it happens every 2- 10 mins. what do i do?
  • how do i know they trust me enaugh to pet them and pick them up?
  • when i come into my room, sometimes their feed holder is empty, do i fill it up? even if it was already filled that day? but sometimes i go to bed, they still have food in the holder, when i wake up some is still there, later i come up and its all gone, do i fill it up again?
thanks for taking the time to read this, i know its alot, and you dont have to answer them all, but please, pleeease answer some
questions. THANKS!!!!!!

1. Talk to them, they get to know your voice. Put your hand into the cage and let them come up to you and sniff it... it takes time. When they come up to you, stroke their heads or backs. Eventually you will be able to scoop them up and cuddle them! Don't pick them up round their middles.

2. Depends on the Degu. It's not good to give them too many snacks... they get fat and diabetic. Try little bits of veg, whole hazelnuts (only once a month, very fatty/proteiny), crushed peas, uncooked spaghetti, carrots? You can get suitable snacks from pet shops.

3. One thing would be to put another wheel in. What setup did they have before you got them? I just leave my boys to it : P hehe

4. It takes time to build up trust. If they keep running away from you, then probably not yet, though try to scoop them up and try. One thing I did was to give them their dust bath, then pick them up out of it.

5. Degus need to have a controlled diet. If they eat all their food then you shouldn't give them more that day, but always make sure they have a constant supply of fresh Timothy hay. They can eat as much of that as they like! Make sure to keep an eye on them at feeding times, and that one Degu does not hog all the food. I give my 2 Degus 2 bowls of food, one bowl per goo. Even if they don't use the same bowl every time, it means that at least there is enough for both.

And no problems Good luck! :3

In moderation... dandelions are good. Just wash them first!

Dust baths are really important for the health of their fur! Buy some chinchilla sand & put it in some container. They need to use this every day or so. It is also a good social thing for them

Oh you'll know, when its empty and everywhere and they have a shiny sheen on them. Diet is really important. I've got a sick skinny degu(who is eating more and more) and two boys where one is fat and the other is skinny since the bigger one bosses the other. I'm working on feeding them more lightly and like others said, supervising it.

If you leave the dust bath in their cage, they will inevitably wee in it... or get random stuff in it like food or sawdust. I use the dustbath as part of their routine... I get them out & put the dust bath (a small travelling cage with 2 inches of dust in it) on the floor with them, or put them in it before they jump out onto the floor. I leave it there the whole time they're out, so they can jump in & out as they want.

You say your degus are older sisters? Do you know what they used to do before you had them? In my case, I got Bobby & Niblet as little degus from a breeder, so it took them a while to 'learn' how to dust-bathe. I had to put them in & sprinkle sand on their backs before they did it themselves!
