Just wanted to let you all know that I finally "broke down" and gave my local vet a call to see what he would say about treating a degu. And guess what?!!! He didn't know what a degu was! And thus he refused to treat it!!! So there!!!

Hey, guess what??!! When you own an exotic pet, you sometimes have to travel farther to find a vet! Like for me? There are 15 vets around us, and one sees exotics. That's part of being an exotics owner! So there!

AGGHH! Will you just please stop fighting!? I totally agree with what jennicat is saying, it is true but in this instance I also undestand what morgaine is saying, she tried, she did something she doesnt believe in just so you all would be happy and she could see if there was anything wrong. There didnt appear to be anything wrong but she did as you asked and called the vet, it didnt work out. I think if anything was wrong with her degu it would have shown by now, so you should forget this argument and move on

It's just so scary that someone would say "welp, there are no vets near me, nyah nyah". I would be terrified if I knew that even if I absolutely needed help, there was not even a vet near me that knew what my animal was.

I get what you saying, and I think she should make an effort to find a vet now incase there are emergencies in the future, I think I will start a thread for vet refferals

You will never get it. To anyone else reading this thread: Do not do what Morgaine has done. Look for an exotic vet with Degu experience, if you have to drive you have to drive. If you have to call 20 vets, call 20 vets. There is no excuse for not providing good medical care.

I give up trying to convince Morgaine that Degus need and deserve medical care. But for everyone else - they do! So please provide good medical care for your pets! If it's hard to find a vet, tough. You found a Degu, so now you HAVE TO FIND A VET TO CARE FOR IT. There are no excuses! Laziness or lack of knowledge is no excuse!

I DO GET IT! I understand and agree totally with what everyone is saying and yes, for any guests or members reading this DO NOT DENY ANY ANIMAL VET CARE, IF YOU KNOW YOU CANT AFFORD IT DONT GET THE PET IN THE FIRST PLACE! I understand perfectly fine, and yes, I think morgaine has made the wrong choices, and vet care is unatuatural but so are pets but they will never know they came from the wild. What I am trying to say is, any injury has probably healed by now and morgaine has her beliefs and nothings going to change that so if we cant convince her to take it to the vet there has got to be something she can do instead, that is better than nothing

I did find a vet who takes degus, 3 towns away! So yes, I did look for other vets, even before I read all your lovely comments! Someone awhile back made a comment that taking an animal to the vet could be made into a fun outing. I just wanted to make it perfectly clear that that is not the case for us.

Yes, we will be taking them to the vet if the need arises, but under no circumstances will we be rushing them to the vet 3 towns away at every little sign of trouble!

I am getting confused here, I thought you where totally against vet care? Also, this was one of those times where she should have been taken to the vet. You keep adding things later on that you should have mentioned earlier, that makes me feel bad after saying what I said so I dont think I will post in this thread anymore

I really don't believe in vet care, but apparently we are monsters for having that view. So yes, all of your comments have made a difference and we will take them to the vet if the need arises.

For now we are taking Balder on monday to get neutered much against our will. But he simply could not live with the boys, he kept raping them. We can't watch that, so we are getting him fixed. We will bring Nanna in as well and have them look at her, not that I see it making much difference at this point.

I am sick of every thread here becoming catty. there is no need to act childish This goes for everyone not aimed at one person.

Good luck getting your goo fixed. He will be happy living with the girls, and you will be happy not having tons of babies, and your girls will live longer not having so many babies.

I understand both sides as well, pets need to go to the doc sometimes. if you have kids you are forced by law to have your kids vaccinated and things.

I can also see both sides to the story too, i don't think anyone is saying you don't care Morgaine but just sometimes we see things differently and on a forum with a lot of people with lots of different opinions it can appear full on and feel like everyone is against you. I think everyone just wants whats best for Nanna. Vet care is un natural for any animal but sometimes we have to take our pets to see a vet as its the best place for them no matter how far we have to travel and what we have to do to pay for it.

Personally i would have rested the degu for a day and seen if there was any improvement, if not i would have gone to my vet straight away, they probably would have prescribed a course of painkillers to see if any improvement. Degus have a high pain threshold but sometimes they need help to recover. I rescue degus and have done for many years and often treat ailments myself but i did work as a vet nurse and also know what i'm doing when it comes to degus through experience of owning them for 12 years so much so my vet has rung me before to ask questions

Well, that is exactly what I did! And I am new to this and don't have your years of experience. That should tell you something.

Status right now is that everyone is fine. We found new homes for Nannas babies, so Balder is alone until he gets fixed. We also found homes for Lunas 5 boys (they will go there next week when they are old enough) and are keeping the one girl. So when Balder is fixed he gets to live with Luna, Nanna and his little daughter Summer
