Well, Balder made it through the operation. He is very tired and in a lot of pain but other than that I think he is okay. The vet said that he did well both during the operation and recovery.

She also said that Nanna is fine and that we did the right thing by isolating her and keeping watch on her for the day.

So everyone seems to be doing great. Balder has to be isolated for 14 days because some of his manhood might still be left until then

We found out that there are actually 2 little girls in Lunas litter, so we are keeping them both and Balder will get to live with 4 girls instead of 3. Good thing we got a huge cage from the beginning

whoohoo glad everything went good. He will be a happy man. You may have to introduce slowly sometimes they will fight even after being separated for a short time. So be prepared.

I'm glad he made it through the operation nicely, and wish him a speedy recovery! Please keep us posted on his progress, and how they integrate back into their family group together.

Hi Morgaine - this problem seems to have caused a lot of "debate". Our degu broke his leg a few years ago. I took him to the vet. The vet basically said that there was no point in doing an x-ray because there was nothing he could do about it. The degu recovered fine in a very short space of time. In the past I have spent vast amounts of money on small animals at the vets and in the end I have felt that it would have been better not to have gone. They sometimes recommend invasive and distressing treatments when the animal would have got better anyway (or they recommend expensive treatment when the animal is going to die in any case). Of course, if you can see an animal is really distressed, then you have to get help but owners should be given credit for making an intelligent judgement. Some people rush off to the doctors when they have a cold, some people never consult a doctor. So Morgaine, everyone doesn't hate you. I am surprised at the judgemental tone of some of the posts. I don't often visit message boards - now I know why.

My horror stems mainly from the fact that she refuses pain medication to her animals. Doing rescue, I've dealt with several broken legs over the years. Many will heal with "bed rest", but all had pain medication. Just as I would do for any person that I asked to limp around on a broken leg waiting for it to heal up. Some do not heal with bed rest, they are too badly broken and will leave the animal lame, and sometimes amputation is the only solution for our little friends.

I think it may be best if we let this thread die out or have it closed, whats done is done and we dont need another thread for arguing over something that happned ages ago and cant be changed, not that it needs to in this case
