need some cage advice

I found a great deal on a 5 foot cage but the only problem is that it has a plastic bottom. Is there anything i can do to make it safe to house the degus?

Any tips are appreciated!!

I suppose you could attach a metal panel to the bottom if it's something you think you'd be able to do. My friend's cage had a plastic base and her degus have never touched it (YET) but I would be worried that mine would chew it and get it stuck in their tummies or choke on it. Also, they would probably escape because, once they get the idea to start chewing something, they can't give up until it's totally gone! I was going to get this one for mine before I knew I had babies on the way: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Flight-Pet-Cage-For-Small-Animal-Chinchilla-Bird-Cage_W0QQitemZ290301411344QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_Pe t_Supplies_Birds?hash=item290301411344&_trksid=p32 86.c0.m14&_trkparms=72%3A1683|66%3A4|65%3A12|39%3A 1|240%3A1318

But I had to buy a really tall double cage instead.

Every degu is different regards chewing. Some of mine have a plastic slide in tray in theres that they never touch but i know others would. One of my friends degus escaped one night as he chewed his way out and ran past them watching tv I would personally cover as much of the plastic as you can maybe some mesh round the sides or something
