Need some input with Cage/Toy ideas.

So it's my first time really posting :O I kinda feel like I'm just running in here unannounced rudely. But anywho :O

I've recently started building my two degus a cage. The one they had was alright for them (It was a aquarium topper cage modified with some tile so they weren't walking on the wire D: which took forever to do) but I think it's time I upgrade them to a bigger and better cage. So I decided to make a cubed cage.

Found the whole cubes at target, thankfully on sale. and I starting making them a cage out of that. (there's way to much work with it D

so the cage is like such;

_l_

so three squares on the bottom and one in the upper middle. and right now it's two stories.

My problem is, I don't know what to put in it now. Since the cage I've made is about 3 times bigger than their previous one and I don't want to leave just a bunch of dead space. They've got a hammock, though I’ll probably make a second one for safety reasons. A Wheel, hopefully getting a second one soon, some stuffed toys chewing blocks. There's also some tunnels I made

I've got a few other things I'm thinking of doing, but I just need some help on what else I can fill the cage with.

I also have a 10 gallon tank I'm trying to get hooked to the cage for a digging pit, though I'm not sure how I could connect it. Any thoughts on that too?

Thanks a bunch!

Here we go! I tried to find old links but I'd moved the pics. So, prepare for one long post! I made this, it's 4ftx3tfx1.5ft

You can really use anything around the house that's not plastic, they're chew monsters! lol I made hammocks out of old retired jeans. Goos love cardboard boxes and pop cases. I put a glass fishbowl of bath dust in the cage too. Their food and hay were in garden clay pots. I gave them old retired socks and small cloth items I could collect. They're smart, they know not to eat it. They'd rather cuddle in it! And remember...lots and lots of toilet paper!! hehe!

Oh!! and, wire clothes hangers and wire cutters make some great clip-things for holding anything to a cage wall!

That's a heck of a nice cage. :O

I'd love to do one like that, though right now with living situations I can't really do it. (Renting so I have to be able to take it down easily when I move)

You have TONS of things for them to chew on. do yours chew that much? D: Mine seem to only want to chew on a wooden house I got them when they were smaller.

thanks for the input.

Welcome to the forum!

I think you're well on your way to making a super fantastic cage for your little ones. Hammocks, tunnels, shelves, boxes to hide in and stash stuff in, and a digging pit...Sounds like a really nice set up.

Making large shelves is a good way to use up a lot of the "dead space" in a cage. You can often times manage it in such a way to get almost double the floor space, just by using shelves and ledges. Isn't it fun to work on setting up a great environment for them? I love making that kind of stuff at home!
