Have you tried laying him on his back in your lap.Placing a hand across his stomache and chest area and putting the drops in?
I have never had to do anything like that with my crew.Just a thought.

Update:
either jerry is getting easier to handle, or i'm getting a better grip, cos over the weekend, most of the drops have gone in first time!!
his eye is still not perfect but looking better by the day. Hopefully he won't need any operation, but it will clear up with the eye drops!

Good to hear that Jerry's eye is getting better, i know all about ulcers and nasty things to get rid off as my dogs prone to getting poked in the eye so had a few vet trips and i know how hard it is to get drops into a dogs eye so i can only guess how hard it is with a degu as very wriggly. It does get easier with practice though and sounds like you have it spot on now

well we used up the first lot of eye drops and it still wasn't 100% better, so we took him back to the vets. he was happy that the eye was looking much better and gave us more drops and a GEL to lubricate his eye.
now if you thought drops are difficult to get in an eye, you should try a gel!!! funnily enough, jerry is not overly happy about being prodded in the eye with a cotton bud with gel on it (i thought a cotton bud is less menacing than a finger!)!!
he has gotten very twitchy again everytime i get him out and is making the whole process very difficult! but,the eye is at least somewhat better!!!

i keep telling him this!!!
on the plus side, i think the pysical contact is helping me bond with him a bit more, even if i do stick nasty things in his eye every time!

Update on Jerry
hi all,
Jerrys eye became pretty bad again and the drops didn't help.
he has just had an operation and his eye has been removed (it had died apparently), but he is OK and coming round as i speak.
Its just as well. i don't think i could have coped with losing another degu so soon after Ben.

Omg i'm so sorry poor Jerry's had to go through that especially so soon after losing his friend I hope he makes a full and fast recovery and lives a long happy life from now on, fingers crossed for you

thank you!
I'm sure it is for the best as he hopefully won't have anymore eye problems. he shouldn't even notice much difference, as he hadn't had full use of his eye for months (if at all - he had cataracts befrore the infection)
my only concern now is that the tumour that ben died from is genetic. I assume (Not 100% sure) that jerry is ben son/nephew/possible brother. there is still a chance that he could develop a tumour in the future.
I'll keep my fingers crossed.
I'll let you know how he is after i've seen him, over the weekend.

Yes i'm sure it is as this way the eye won't be there to effect him anymore so he should lead a much happier problem free life I'm not sure about the tumour but maybe talk it over with your vet see what he says as theres every possibility it was just one of those sad things and it won't effect Jerry at all, same as cancer misses generations its potluck. I'll keep my fingers crossed for the lil fellow and hope he's back to his mischievous self very soon
