Question

Squeak. Squeak. Squeak.

So my two Degus haven't really been acting strangely until today. When we got them, one of them was bigger, as in fatter, than the other, but we didn't really suspect pregnancy. Lately the one that's bigger has been been squeaking NON-STOP, and I don't know if this means she's having labor pains or something. I know pregnancy is a possibility, since we got them when they were four months old. But they normally don't squeak like this! They usually make little chirpy noises and things like that. So is my Degu pregnant? And if so, is there anything I can do about the squeaking?

Have you checked their genders? That's definitely the first step .

other than making 100% sure of their genders there is nothing you can do really. If the one that is squeaking IS female you can read the Help! Pregnancy! post and that will give you some ideas. A loud single chirp every .5-1 second is usually a mating call but I think only the guys do that (it would mean either his pups were just born or they just did the naughty cha-cha).
There is nothing that you can do to stop squeaking unforetunately. I am lucky and got very quiet goos. apart from their gnawing and occasional chirps there has been nothing loud.
you might want to bring them into a small animal vet who has experience with degus to determine their sexes if you cannot do it by yourself.

I'm glad that this post was put up. I have had my little girls for almost a year. I got them last December. All can be going well and all of a sudden, they will start to chirp, chirp, chirp, and won't stop! It's like something has bitten them and they won't stop until I find something to comfort them. Nothing has been done different out of their routine. But it's like all of a sudden, they just start chirping really loud. Other than these little outbreaks, they are very happy and quiet. Why do they do this? I feel so sorry for them when they go through these times. What is wrong with them?

Well I'm having my sister's boyfriend's mom come over (she's an animal expert) and she's going to determine the sexes. Not sure fi she can tell whether one of them is pregnant.

just make sure she is careful with the one you think is pregnant as she will have to hold it and possibly flip it over to check genders =\

my goos would do this, i think something spooks them. either a smell or sound. they never did it often, but when they did, whooa boy it's like bloody murder! lol i used to sit beside them and talk to them, console them. then she'd continue but a lower volume, and take my treat. while eating it in front of me she's still quietly chirping, i always told her not to talk with her mouth full! lol it was SO cute. i felt bad for them too, but they do stop eventually.

Yeah, I think something startles them or spooks them when that happens. Sometimes little Miss Mana will be startled out of sleep chirping like that. I wonder if she's had a bad dream or something.

I just say "shhhh, it's ok little one" or "you're all right little girl" and make little shushing sounds, and she's learned that means she's ok.

It's kind of sad when that happens, but I think the longer the Degus know you, and the more times you comfort them with your voice, then the easier it gets to settle them back down. Poor little guys!

It turns out she probably is pregnant, because we found out that one's a boy and one's a girl. Thanks for the advice everyone.
