what to do with Galvenized wire
Hi me agian!! Can you tell I have a lot of questions!
Okay, I'v read on a previos post that galvenized wire is really bad for goos, but I have just bought a cage of g. wire. Is there anything I can do to it, like spray it or something. I don't want to harm my soon-to-be goos. Thanks agian, I will ask around at some pet stores too.

I'm not sure there is much you really can do... unless you can return it... I happen to know that my degus chew day and night so galvanized wire is out of the question. Some Martins cages are available with powder coated wire, there are also some available like at pet smart/pet co..... Martin's Cages Inc. - The source for all your pet cage needs.
My most recent cage I bought from petsmart. They don't sell it online though.

I bought the cage off of ebay, so I don't know if I can return it. It hasn't arrived yet, so I'll see what I can do.

If nothing else, maybe once you get it, you can resell it on eBay, to at least break even?
Or you could email the seller immediately, and ask them not to ship it if they haven't already. I know sometimes that can get you bad feedback, but if you explain the reason behind it - that your new Goos can't have that kind of wire, etc, maybe they'd understand.

I'd agree, If they've already shipped it, you can try to do your best selling it back on ebay.

OK, but is there anything I can do to it? Like put a powder or something on it? I've read that scrubbing it with vinagar will ware the zinc off of the wire, is that true? okay thanks

I'm sure there is SOMETHING you can do to it to take the zinc off, but that may involve using other chemicals which may not be much better. I'm not sure I'd even trust altered galvanized wire with small animals. As far as getting it coated, I'm not sure I've never researched that, but I wouldn't be surprised if it ended up costing more to do that than buy a new cage. Perhaps you could just get another pet that can live in that cage? lol Just kidding I'm going to go look up powder coating right now

There is no guarantee you would be able to remove all the zinc, unless you immersed it in acid, ...vinegar is not strong enough. What's more, once you remove the galvanizing, the cage is going to rust. That's the point of the coating.
Really, there is nothing you could do to the cage that 1) the degu couldn't chew through, or 2) that would be cheaper than buying a new cage.
Basically, your hosed. I don't know of any animals safe to keep in galvanized cages. You could try selling it in the local paper, putting up flyers in pet stores, but basically, you are taking advantage of someone like you got taken advantage of. Possibly putting another animal at risk. I don't know that I'd feel very good about that. Sorry, no good options I can think of....

I went on and asked about it at yahoo answers and aside from many many rude answers, all I got was a referral to Eastwood Company: Auto Tools, Body Repair, Classic Car Restoration, House of Kolor Paint, Powder Coating. I took a look at the site and it really doesn't seem like what you need. I think your best bet will be to do your best to sell that one off and get a new cage. I'd suggest a "Martins cages" cage. Most to those have galvanized or powder coated options.

OK, I found one on that martins cages that is very similar to the cage that I puchised on ebay, but what should I get? There is PVC coated or Powder Coated, also galvenized- which is out- the PVC is cheaper, but which one is better? I think I will resell the cage on ebay, for a cheaper price and state that is is g. wire which is not good for some small animals, that way people like me don't just buy it not knowing. Thanks for all you advice, it's been a big help.
this is the one I found on that martins site
I can't get a pic of the one I got on ebay, the seller has it proteced. Anyways the one I got on ebay had three stories with ramps and then the tank on the bottom. I thought it was great b/c it had so much climbing and everything, oh well, I'd rather get a safe one.

IMO the powder coating is better. PVC just seems like they'd chew it off quickly... That looks like a great cage! That picture looks like a 10 gallon topper or a tall 20... (Unless the picture was altered) So you know Martin's cages does have a 20 gallon long, topper which would give them a bit more room (I'm considering getting that for my next cage) good luck!

That really does look like a great cage!
I also have the powder-coated, and have had really good success with it.

This is the cag eI got off from ebay. I couldn't get him to not send it, so I have it now. I have put an ad in my local paper, so hopefully I get some luck!

yes, I've seen that one on ebay before, Luckily I knew about the whole galvenized thing.... Are you still looking for a different cage? If that is a ten gallon tank, I think i've seen tank toppers for 10 gals at the normal petstore.

yes. I have found one on Martins cages, but if I could find one in a petstore that would be great. I would really like not to have to pay for shipping! If I do find one in ia petstore, how would I know if its made out of the galvenized wire? Would it say it right on the bow or package?
