Where are Degus legal?

I'm wondering where Degus are legal. This is because I would really like to adopt two, but they're not sold in pet stores around here. However, I know for sure that they're sold in my state [new york] about 3 hours away from my location. I was wondering if this means that they are deffinately legal to own in all of New York.

Is there a site where it lists what animals are legal to keep in New York?

No, there is no such list available online, or off line as far as I'm aware. But, this article tells you what agencies you can call to find out the laws in your area about Degus:

Degus are legal in New York .
