Baby Dwarf Hamster
Hello, I'm new here and a pround parent of 5 dwarf hamsters, 4 sugargliders, 1 African Grey, and 8 fish. I need help with my new baby dwarf hamster. My hamster had 3 babies and on the third day something happened to one of the babies (they are now 5 days old). It's let got bitten by one of the parents. Now it's black. What do I do? I'm scared that it will cause the rest of the leg to get infected and eventually lead to death. It's too little to take it to the vet (because I can't touch them yet). Please help! Thanks.

Oh wow! That leg looks completely dead.
Im not really sure what you should do... Maybe it will just fall off?
I adopted a hamster once with 3 legs. Im not sure what has happened to her, but I know it was an injury of some sort. If mine survived something like that, I hope yours can too!
Does anyone think there anyway to amputate it? I dout the baby can feel it anymore, and you definatly dont want an infection.
Good luck! I really hope he does OK [:

I finally found a solution. I amputated the leg myself for fear of infection and losing the hamster. I got medical gloves, put my hands in them and washed them with soap and water. Then I rubbed my hands all in the hamsters bedding of the cage. Then I picked up the baby, cut the foot off with scissors (I did clean them with alcohol), stopped a little blood with a septic pen, and then put triple antibiotic ointment on the stub. I put the baby back, the mom sniffed him and cleaned him up. I'm so grateful that she accepted him back. He is now fine and still looks healthy.

Wow, I have to say you did a good job, its not something I would have done myself but you did an amazing job of it. Just to make sure I would take it to the vet when it can be handled properly

I may have taken it to the vet, but like I said before, it is too young. The mother knows me and my scent and would probably trust me more than the vet. Anyhow, I'm an American living in Saudi Arabia and the vets here are not very good. I probably have more knowledge than them! Most vets here are brought in from other countries like Pakistan, India, Philappines, etc. I took my African Grey in to get her wings cut (scared of him flying away), they made a mess out of her. I finally got online and found out how to do it myself...she looks a lot better!
Anyhow, baby hamster is doing great. The mother now lets me go in and pick the babies up (I wear the gloves!). When I do pick them up, she usually goes out and eats, runs, etc. Guess I'm just the babysitter!

I think they are either Campbell's or Winter White Dwarves. When you buy them here, all they say is that they are hamsters. I knew right away they were dwarves, but didn't know what kind until I got on the internet. They look like the winter white, but because it is always so hot here, their coat never changes. It has gotten lighter. I will try to take pictures tonight and post the parents so you can see them.

What does RRW mean? After looking around, I've come to the conclusion they are Winter Whites.

Russian Winter White. I meant RWW, not RRW
Haha, sorry... I use the abreviation too much.
