Angry Gerbil went crazy

About three weeks ago I picked up two new little gerbils from a pet store, one of them was very tiny and the other was a little larger. I have had gerbils before but this one was the sweetest thing ever, he was always calm and actually loved to be held, always hopped into my hands for treats and would sit in my lap while I read while all the others just love running around the place. But tonight while I was playing with them in their cage he started acting a little funny, I tried to feed him a mealworm but he bit down on my finger really hard, thought he might have missed the mealworm so I just placed the worm on the ground and moved my hand to a different part of the cage, he actually followed and kept biting me over and over, I withdrew my hand from the cage and he started bouncing around, turning on the spot and falling over the place. He bit one of his cagemates so I used a tea towel to pick him up and hold him in my lap, I didn't hold him tight but he struggled and was freaking out, and eventually he just started kicking his back legs furiously while laying on his back, then he just died.

I only had him for about three weeks... Has this happened to anyone else before? What the **** happened to my little boy? I am really confused...
