Hamster or Gerbil

Hi, Here's my question, I fell in love with 2 gerbils in a petsmart store. Now I have had hamsters for years and still have quite a few. I feel pretty smart about them but this is making me crazy. The gerbils had gerbil faces . That long pointy look, but fat hamster bodies and short hamster tails. The petsmart small animal women swore they were gerbils and they probably lost their tail due to fighting with other gerbils they had in the cage. That was bad enough for me to just buy first and ask questions later. When I got them home and did my own exam they were two different sexes. I knew what that meant right away and started looking for more cages. When the babies where born they looked just like tiny hamsters. So what are they hamster or gerbils? I need to know so I can tell if they can live alone or if they have to be seperated. I swear the mom and dad look half gerbil half hamster. I don't know if that is possible?

Is there any way you could post some pictures? I'm sure it would be much easier to tell by looking. Oh ok, and I just want to see pictures Sorry I'm not more help, I've never seen a real gerbil.

that's really weird. I've never heard of a hamster/gerbil cross...Pictures would definitely help.

A hamster gerbil sounds impossible. It is probley a '' type '' of hamster you haven't ever seen before. Chinese hamsters have long tails.
