hamster question

I have been pondering over the idea a lot here lately to get a pocket pet. I have had hamsters before but it has been YEARS. My tank is ready for a new pet but I can`t seem to make up my mind. Things have changed since I was little. Now there are dwarf hamsters, black bear hamsters, teddy bear hamsters, polar hamsters, HELP!!!! What was the original hamster? The ones that I had as a kid was the size of my palm. They were (tan and white) and dark brown almost black and white. What is the difference in all of the kinds and which was the one that I had when I was little????

Ya know, I have always wondered the same thing! When I was a kid there were just hamsters. I vaguely remember dwarf hamsters coming into the picture, but now I thought about getting a hamster and there were choices! I was so confused

You`re exactly right Becki. I see all of these other hamsters and none of them look like my Cracker or chocolate Chip. Those were my hamsters names when I was a kid. Have no idea if they were a boy or a girl. Would be nice to find another that looked kind of like the ones I had.
