Hi, my name is Brenda and I'm a first-time Hamster owner. I raise bunnies (
house rabbits) and am fairly skilled at treating their illnesses and injuries, but realize there are significant differences regarding care and treatment with my new friend!
So here's the scoop - I discovered a hammy with a broken leg, and adopted him to be sure he got the best care available. It's his back left leg. He's a baby
Teddy Bear hamster, not much bigger than my thumb. He seems very spry, other than an ungainly gait. I know the break was recent, that's why I just had to take him. I knew he wouldn't get optimum care where he was. So... how can I best treat his injury? The info I've read so far is that I should feed him high calcium foods such as bread soaked in milk and high-calcium dog biscuits, and otherwise leave him alone to heal. Is this accurate? Any other tips? Should I be giving him something to treat any pain he may be feeling?
Other than the injury, he seems quite healthy. His eyes are clear, his tail dry, he sleeps, eats, and scoots around. He's not gnawing at the injured leg. I haven't given him a wheel or anything to really climb on, since I don't want him to aggravate the injury.
Well, sorry so wordy! I'm just an animal nut, and I'm inexperienced with hamsters. It would break my heart if I found out I was doing something wrong!
Thanks!!!!!!!!!!!
Brenda
