I just don't understand how a 13 year old could neglect an animal (until it starves to death) AND lie about it at the same time. I'm sure she knew that hamsters need food and water to live, so why wasn't she providing it even sporadically? And why did she lie? I could MAYBE see lying if the hamster died right after she got it and she didn't want to seem like an irresponsible pet owner but to know that she wasn't giving it any care and lying and saying that she was. That goes beyond irresponsibility in my mind.

taban do not balme your self for anothers action, you are unable to see in to the future. I was 6 when i got my first hamster my mum made us keep it in the family room so that way she was able to make sure we were feeding, watering and cleaning the cage all the time. 13 is plenty old enough to be responsible for a pet, especially since here you are leagally able to baby sit infants. The only problem is sometimes one doesn't realize that someone is not responsible enough to take care of a pet until after it is too late. Please do not blame your self in anyway for what happened to the poor hamster. You did everything you could to make sure she knew what she was getting her self in to. you can't sit there and hold her hand and make sure she is doing what she is suppose to with it all the time. Her mother should have stepped in and made sure the poor thing had food and water or at least inform you as to what was going on and given you the chance to step in and bring the hammie home with you.

I agree with everything that's been said and boy would I like to wring that girl's neck right now, sorry but boy does that break my heart. God forbid that monstrous girl ever has another pet! Pardon my anger but I can't help it. How absolutely cruel! Let me know Taban, if you talk to your cousin about this...I would love to hear what she possibly has to say about starving a hamster and letting it die of hunger and thirst. I hope she really understands what she did to that poor thing.
And not your fault in the least!

Right on Skratikans! I totally agree. I am livid. Taban, make your cousin read these posts, or at least tell her about them...a 13 year old that does not understand feeding and watering of a living creature? Ask her how she would like to be locked in her room for a month with no water or food. Wonder what she would say. I am so mad I can barely speak. Sorry.

Yes Taban, let us know what happened with this 13 year old and what the **** her mother had to say about letting her daughter starve a hamster to death. I would love to know what they both have to say about it! 13 is a fine age for having a pet, sure, but not if you have no clue whatsoever about taking care of another living creature.

Well I was wondering actually, how the mom could let a small animal starve to death and go without water in her own house. Did she not care a whit about the animal or just never went in her daughter's room or what? The girl is the main one to blame but Mom is second in line for letting her daughter neglect a poor animal.
Again Taban, no blame on you at all. I am really sorry that happened but it was not your fault that girl neglected the hamster.

yes we all agree this in no way is Tabans fault. Why dont we let this rest now? This is a post from a while back and im sure Taban doesn't want to keep thinking about this unfortunate event.
The Mother and daughter are both to blame and it is unfortunate but there is nothing anyone can do now.
We dont know what was in the mothers head and how she or her daughter could let this happen to a poor little hammie. And we can't ask them. Why keep bringing this up?
Lets just hope that the next time this little girl gets a pet she will be have matured and end up taking care of it and that the mother will keep tabs on her daughter to make sure that she is not neglecting it. All we can do is hope.
Taban did the best she could and did talk to the parents beforehand. After that it was out of her hands. She was trying to help someone experience the joy of having a pet by getting them started. She has a good heart.
She is not to blame we all agree.

And this is why you should never boy other people pets... Even though they are closley related to you.
I only think the kid is to blame here. Not the mom or anybody else. My mom would never let me starve an animal, but on the other hand, she would never let me keep an animal sombody gave to me... When I godt my first chin, I was only 11. But she made me read a book about chinchillas, and do all sorts of recherch.
If anybody should give a teenager animals, it should be the parents, they must be the ones who knows how responcerble the kids are.
But it's the kids fault if you ask me...!

Taban had the mothers permission...so the mom is also at fault to have not watched her kid and contact Taban when her daughter wasnt takin care of the hammie.....Im sure if she had contacted Taban she would have taken the hammie in.
Taban did nothing wrong...she had permission.
