I myself am a very young girl who can actually have a black bear hamster (penolope mines name is) in my bedroom. they do not stink if you give them the proper care they need as in (pine shavings, vegetables at moderations, a place to house and a hiding place). they do not normally bite, mine has only bite me once and that was my fault because i scared her and it was the day i got her and she did not know me yet. they are the most freindly hamsters i have ever met and they are very soft, fuzzy and cute.i would recommed a black bear hamster for your classroom very much!

I would definatly say a syrian Hamster. I have a syrian hamster and he is a darling!!
Even though I can't even put him in his ball.......... Because he goes to sleep!!! LOL..
But luckily for me I can put him out to play without a ball because he is so tame
Valentine is an angel sent from heaven, he has never bitten me, or threatened to, and he'll let me do whatever I want to him and he just doesn't care. He comes when I call and I love to give him small kisses on his cute little belly!
He is two years old now though, so he's running out of fuel and if I let him out he just goes back to bed, bless him. He is one of a kind and I know not to expect the same from any other hamster I get in the future.
Have you come to a desition? Can you get one?? I hope you can because I think they make wonderful pets, I know I've been lucky with mine and I'm sure you will be to
xxxx

Pine litter and cedar too is toxic to small animals.Aspen,Carefresh,Yesterday's News or hemp/paper based litters are safe.

i believe thats true because i had 6 hamsters in my life and i hope to get more. first i had a log hair syrarian, second, a short haired syrarian, third, a short haired syrarian, fourth, a short haired black bear hamster, fifth, a russian robowski dwarf hamster, and sixth, a chinese dwarf hamster. so i know what i'm talkin' about. by far, my black bear hamster was the most cutest, friendliest, nicest hamster that ive owned. and he outlived and hamster Ive ever owned. he lived to be 4 years old no joke. he had his fourth birthday and died of old age January 5th, 2009. also, he was a fighter. he survived wet tail, and dehydration.Literly. im NOT lying. go check out my weebly page bout my hamsters that aready died at: Inlovingmemoryofmidnight.weebly.com

Hi Nan.
"Black Bear Hamsters" are black syrian (golden) hamsters - zoological name "mesocricetus auratus".

The "Black Bear" nonsense is simply a marketing gag. The same applies to "Panda Bear"- and "Teddy Bear"-Hamsters.

It is nonsense to call them "Bear". "Panda" are simply colored black with white spots, "Teddy" are longhaired syrians and "Black Bears" are simply black syrians.

Please avoid this "Bear"-nonsense, it is only confusing.
Greetings
Kay

I believe the whole bear term is used for their look alike characteristics. Short tails, Stand up on hind feet, the way they look when stood up and the color variations. I use it for that reason. and as a cute name. I mean, describing it as a Piebald, or whatever, people give you a blank look when you describe them.

Its like calling an automobile a car or truck. its just more specific.

Cool

"Bear"-Nonsense

If you donīt now, what a black automobile looks like, it wont help you if others call it a "car" or a "truck".

The problem with this "Bear"-nonsense is, some people try to imply additional character and personality traits to a "Bear"-hamster, which is definitely not the case. Black hamsters are not more or less "laid back" than other hamsters, nor do they live any longer. The origin of a hamster (i.e. fancy or commercial breeder) is more affecting this characteristics than its color or hair length. Other stories are simply fairy tales.

It is like naming a red van a "Big Wonder" and saying it will never be part of an accident cause it is red. Would you buy a car called "big wonder" ?

So, out of curiosity, can you keep different hamster breeds in the same cage? Dwarf and Syrian? What about Syrian and bear- since they are the same thing? Bear and teddy bear?
I was told in the pet shop that I can't choose one bear and one teddy bear.
Not that I trust anything the people at that Petland say- they are full of lies. But I decided to get two of the same breed, just in case they were right.

Keeping hamsters together

Hi Alls.
No, you can`t keep syrian hamsters together with any other hamster. Syrians are solitary living animals. You canīt even keep two adult syrian hamsters together. They will fight each other and they will fight to death. All stories about syrian hamsters kept together successfully in one cage are fairy tales. Please do not try this out!

For syrian hamsters (regardless of color and hair length!) the main and basic rule is "one cage - one hamster".

You are only permitted to let a male and a female come together if the female is "in heat" and if you want to breed them.

And syrians will also fight with dwarfs. They are a delicious meal for an adult syrian hamster.

I have never tried to keep e.g. robos and winter whites together. Maybe and if the cage is big enough.... but they are food competitors so more likely they will fight.

Greetings
Kay

NEVER keep syrians together.
As mentioned they will fight to the death. They are solitary animals.
Dwarf hamsters sometimes get along, but not in all cases.

They are very nice

My black bear hamster is so friendly.I just got him.The pet store said that this particular type of hamster was kinda mean.I got to handling him right away.He has not tried to bite me once yet.I think a male black bear hamster would be perfect for your 1st graders.
