Can Piggies and Rats Play together?
I was thinking of getting a single piggie and letting my two female rats interact with him under supervision...has anyone done that before? Could this work...or is this a formula for disaster?

as long as you are watching them closely i would say go for it. My rats have played with cats, dogs, and rabbits before just fine under my supervisoin (the cat was declawed and i knew it very well, the dog i also knew very well, and of course i know my own bunnies well!)
dont take your eyes off of them. dont even turn your head.

I wouldn't have thought that would be a good idea. Guinea pigs are timid with other animals so probably would just run away from them anyway. I have had rats and the closest they got to the guinea pigs was nose to nose through the cage bars. I don't think the guinea pig would hurt the rat but I'm not sure about vice versa...
I don't know, you could try. I searched Google but I can't find anything about rats and guinea pigs together!

I personally wouldn't do it.As you know I am looking for a GP now too....
It depends on the personalities of both the rat and GP.As long as both animals are laid back,I think it MAY be okay under supervision...but you never know.Rats CAN become aggressive with other species.
I know people who have rasied rats up with kittens and the kittens grew into cats and would look at the rats as friends, instead of prey or playthings.
But also we had a cat before who developed a fear of rats, because two of my first rats (yrs ago) lunged at his face and attacked him.Since he was afraid of rats and if you took a rat out,Dusti (cat) would take off like the world was coming to an end!

I wouldn't do it.. it's not worth the risk of something happening to either piggie or rats.

Well I do know it is safe for rats and rabbits to be together as I let my males out to play and it is in the same area with my rabbit, and she leaves them alone and they sometimes will sniff her and one time tried to hump her but that was all.
It really depends on the rat and GP personalities, it is okay to try supervised by first letting the rat stay in your hands and let the rat's sniff the piggy. If the GP is nervous, then that would be all for the day, just keep introducing them to each other slowly. But if the piggy cares less about the rat and don't show any fears than you can let the rat down and watch them closely.
So it depends really, Just need very close supervision. But even so they may never like each other and want nothing to do with one another or in worse case scenario, hate each other. So I say try it out but slowly.

thats what i am saying! If you have guts to keep your rats and mice together that are natural preditors then why not let them play supervised with your GP?
of course never take your eye off them.

Even if you do let them play together, your guinea pig will still need a mate of it's own kind. Guinea pigs communicate with their own language, much different from a rat's.

I know this is an old post but i found this and thought i would ad it...
Guinea pigs are peaceful species and they usually get along well with rabbits if they are introduced to each other when they are small but you have to watch them carefully so that the rabbit doesn't hurt your guinea pig.Guinea pigs do not get along with mice, rats or hamsters. On the other hand dogs, cats and other bigger pets are dangerous for them.
Skratikans..did u ever try it?? Sorry if the answer is here somewhere and i am behind a bit. But i was just wondering how or if it worked out for you.

Personally, I wouldn't. Why would you get a social animal, deprive it of all companionship with it's own kind, and then force it to interact with a species that is alien to it?

Your right, no one should force anything. Im sure she wouldn't do that. What was stated in the article i found is that they do not get along together.
But i think letting them play together for short periods of time under supervison might be ok. Having them live together not such a good idea. There would be a big risk.
Did she ever get a piggie? Anyone know?
