Charlotte Has Ovarian Cysts

Sorry for my long absence. I really do go through phases where I just cant seem to sit still at the comp like I can in my other phases when I just veg. here.
But I knew there are some here on the board who would want to know when something significant changed in my pig's health. And well, there is some bad news about Charlotte as noted by the title of this thread.

The good news is she is already scheduled for surgery later today at the guinea pig specialist office in Dallas.

It all started when I noticed she was losing weight and losing her beautiful long hair around the mid section. I treated for mites in case that was the culprit and gave her time to regrow hair. But nothing happened. The hairloss increased and I looked into my online medical references to find that ovarian cysts was the most likely problem considering her other symptoms.

I printed out and took the info to the local vet. I was allowed to hold Charlotte on my lap while they did the ultrasound. The vet took a still pic and sent it and Charlotte's other info to the specialist I told him I preferred she see. And they both concluded it was indeed ovarian cysts.

So those of you who want to wish us luck keep us in your thoughts. I sure hope Charlotte comes out ok. I am keeping my hopes up for now.

Jade

Good news so far. The surgery went well and the vet said Charlotte is doing good. She's nibbled a bit on her food, but since the drive was stressful she didnt do more than that during it, and we just got home.

I am finishing up preparing the hospital cage for her. I cant put her back with the others till I am sure she is doing well and eating and drinking and pooping. Which is easier to tell when she is alone.

I have driven almost 8 hours today... most of that to and from and in Dallas... and I am so tired my ears are ringing and my head is floating... I feel punch drunk from the road wear. LOL. But I know its nothing to what Charlotte has had to go through, so I will be fine. I hope she will be too.

She had a huge growth on one ovary and a small one on the other. I dont know if the tumors were cancerous. Is it only cancerous ones that cause those symptoms? Or do any cysts on the ovaries do that? Anyway, if it was cancerous then my only worry now is to hope it did not metastasize before it was removed. I hope we have gotten them in time and spared Charlotte to live a few more years with us.

Thanks to everyone for the well wishes. Positive thoughts do good.

That's wonderful she looks OK and made it through surgery.
Can't the vet answer the question for you(if it was cancer or not).
Keep us posted on Charlotte.

This was my second days update written on one of my other forums, But I wasnt able to do all I wanted on the internet that day because I was using a frinds comp, due to my ISP not working.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Well, Charlotte still seems to be doing well. Except that last night I got so worried about her not moving at all from her hiding spot in the hospital cage after several hours of watching. So I did something drastic, that some may disagree to, but I was really getting scared. She was even starting to get cold. So I put her back into the cage with Ziggy and Cheyenne.

She actually began eating and drinking as soon as she was back, though she took frequent rests. I am putting her back in the hospital cage for periods of time to watch her output and such. But I honestly think she is just lost without the others and has no motivation to try to eat or drink without them. Or maybe it is the home turf she misses. But it worked. Because I was afraid for a while there that I would have to hand feed her.

Pain management is being taken care of. She actually got really sassy with Cheyenne today when she wouldnt move out of Charlotte's way. Cheyenne was being obstinate, but Chalotte won out. It made me smile. It was just fussing and a threat by Charlotte to pull Cheyene's hair if she didnt move. But ti let me know she is back.

I am certainly thankful to be in a much better finacial state than I was when Reuben was having problems with his feet. Charlotte''s surgery put me back down to almost nothing, but I should get to work again soon.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Todays update is she is getting around good and the incision is healing well. She wheeks along with the others when I yell "munchies" And she chows down. So hopefully things will continue to go as well.

Thanks again for all the support.
