Guinea pigs, Cavia porcellus, are commonly known as cavies (singular is cavy).

Life Span: around 5-7 years is typical, although up to 10 isn't too unusual.

Size: Approximately 10 inches long, 2-3 pounds.

Housing for Guinea Pigs
Guinea pigs, as mentioned previously, do best kept in groups of two or more, but most readily available commercial cages are not large enough to house a pair of pigs. The guideline is 2 square feet per guinea pig, so for a pair you would need 4 square feet. Some sources recommend 3 square feet for a pair, which is acceptable for a short time but is a pretty cramped situation for the pigs.
