Hi- my 1st post! Does anyone protect their piggies from flystrike??
Hi, I better introduce myself 1st, I'm Becky and I live in Devon UK with my 2 boy piggies George and Diego, (oh yeah and a couple of kids!!)
I have been given some Rear Guard which is a lotion for rabbits to protect them from flystrike and I wondered if anyone has ever used this on guineas? It doesn't say anywhere on the bottle not to use it on guinea pigs but it only talks about protecting rabbits.
It says contains 6% w/v cyromazine
If anyone had any info on this it would be great!

Ive never heard of it...
But if your guinea pigs live inside and are able to clean themselves, and you keep their cage nice and clean, I personally wouldnt worry about fly strike

Hi, thanks for your replies. I'm afraid my boys are strictly outside guinea's as my other half will not have them in the house at all.
The reason I wanted to use rear guard was because one of them is very large! I weighed him the other week and he was about 1.4kg!! my other is only about 900g, still not a bad size though. Diego the large one has a mucky patch above his bottom so I wanted to protect him especially.
If anyone knows about rear guard I would be greatful of any info.

Oh, OK. I guess that would be a reason to be concerned.
I dont know for sure, but if it is safe for rabbits, I would think that it is safe for guinea pigs. You might want to do some more research and get more opinions before you try it though.
In the mean time, just make sure to clean off his lil butt every day

The "mucky patch" is his grease gland, and is supposed to be there, some however have more prominent grease glands than others.

have you tried building them a cage that is off the ground so they dont sleep in the grass ect? i have built chicken coops and rabbit hutches for really cheep and they dont take a huge ton of extra skills or tools to build
