I have entered the world of guinea pig ownership!! I have 2 piggies right now one is black and called Jake(soon to be changed) and his brother is ginger and white and called Elvis (soon to be changed!) These are my first ever guinea pigs so any tips would be useful! I have rescued them from my idiotic brother who was gonna turf them out into the wild so i didnt get time to research before hand! I will however be reading up on them tonight but anyone here who has guinea pigs that wants to share some info feel free.......i also need 2 new names for them as i dont like their original names and i figured new start new names as they dont know their names anyway!

So, crash course! First of all, practically everything you can buy in a pet store for guinea pigs is undersized, unhealthy, or even downright dangerous to them, so be picky in what you buy.

Thankyou Jennicat i will check out those links! As for cages they havent actually got one lol they are in my garage (never had a car in so no fumes etc) and they have a big wooden box full of blankets as a bed and have tubes etc to play with and balls to roll around etc plus a hay basket hanging on the wall for their hay/grass and a big dog bowl in middle of room for their pellets and veggies and a water bottle hanging off the wall next to their bed box so thats the housing side sorted lol they have never had so much room bless em they been popcorning around already...my brother kept them in a toy box so these lil guys are appreciative of the space lol i am feeding them plain pellets mixed with their old crappy food for the time being so i can gradually switch them over without upsetting their stomachs plus they are getting fresh fruits and veggies now which i dont think they have ever had.......i am gonna get pics for you guys as soon as i can get them to sit still for a few mins lol.......all i need now is new names........Any ideas??? xxx

They also need fresh hay daily.
And make sure they get vitamin C.Alot of the pet store foods are crappy...avoid ones with sunflower seeds.The pellets should be just pellets,no bits and pieces in it.


Also those run about balls are bad for them.

Thanks everyone! They are doing well although still a little skittish as my brother barely handled them! They have unlimited hay daily just like my bunners do and they are loving the veggies and fruits! The pellets i have them on are totally plain just like the ones my bunnies have but are obviously made for piggies and not bunnies lol xxxx

Most piggies will remain somewhat skittish, they never really seem to be all that comfortable being picked up like ratties do.
