Question

Spay Question

I've got 5 boy guinea pigs (3 in one cage and 2 in another) and 1 girl by herself, Misty. Her cagemate, Oreo, died a week ago and I am thinking about having her spayed instead of neutering one of the boys to put in with her. Banta and Fuzzy don't get along well, and I was thinking of putting Banta in with Misty since she's so sweet and could use the company.

How long should she heal before introducing her to one of the boys and can I assume once she's spayed, she is no longer fertile?

Thanks for any input!!!

I wouldn't have it done unless medically necesary. The surgery is very tough on the sow, and it's not a surgery with a very high success rate. Neutering the boar would be safer, but it's still surgery.

How about a new female friend for her?

http://www.cavyspirit.com/neutering.htm has a lot of information on the spay/neutering of guinea pigs.
