We use to own some a few years ago. They are neat little pets and very friendly.
Have you tried given them live crickets? They go into major hunter mode! Ours had branches in their cage and they would sit up top and watch as we would throw some crickets in. Then they would run down that branch and start chasing them.

Yes, I have given them live crickets. But after almost a week one of them is still chirping somehow!!
There is one youngster from a birth, maybe three weeks old. I have some worry about him, and concerns about how many other adults there are (four) and how many are female (one, or two); they are very hard to sex.
Importing them into the U.S. is now illegal, I believe, so I am very interested in breeding them and having more. A friend has three females and wants a male.

the young develop so fast it is amazing. they start walking on the 4rd or 5th day and have open eyes and fur. it was very amazing to see. i was actually never good with sexing them. so i cant offer much help there. just try to sex them how you would a mouse or what not. looking at the space diff between there poop and there pee holes. if you have a boy and a girl you could tell pretty easy looking at them side by side. tell me what you find out.

They're really lovely!!
They live longer than 'normal' mice don't they too? A short lifespan is the biggest 'downside' of mice and ratties, so that's another nice thing - as well as their evident cuteness!!
