Acquiring cage parts...

I have three questions:

I was thinking of getting a rolled-up wire (like chicken wire) at a regular hardware shop, my only worry is that the wire is so rolled up that it will never get flat (and my cage will be irregular and not rectangular in shape)...what do you guys think?

Also, as I was searching for other materials to get for my self-made cage, I was trying to find out stores or on-line places where you could get a latch (or a hook with a coiled end, that you would normally find with a purchased already-made cage). I have looked all over town today, and found none. Any suggestions on where I could find a latch like that?

Also, if you were building a cage, would you focus more on height or width of the cage (Im building one for two of my rats)?

Any suggestions would help!

First, I'm sure you could get the wire to flatten out, just lay something really heavy on it for a few days once you have it cut how you want.

For the latches, you can go to http://www.martinscages.com/ to the cage parts and supplies section and they have wire door latches for only 75 cents.

I would probably go for height with plenty of balconies and things like that, just make sure that you have at least one level where it's tall enough for them to stand up straight.

try makeing the frame out of PVC pipe and find a way to connect the hardware cloth. to its self. I went to a feed store and bought hog nose rings to clamp the wire to its self because hog nose rings when sealed dont have anay sharp points
