after surgery

i was just wondering if it was ok to put a rat who just had surgery back into a cage with her cagemate? will the cagemate pick at the stitches?

Most rats will mess with their stitches all by themselves and will do more damage than a cagemate would have the chance to. When placed with other rats, there is the chance they will mess with the stitches. It would also depend on what personalities your rats have- do you have power groomers or major chewers? Do you have busy females or lazy males? I would possibly wait a few days after the surgery to ensure then incision has been healed first before placing the rat with other rats. What kind of surgery was it? Where are the stitches?

i would seperate her for 5 days to a week, depending on her stitches. this is what my vet had me do when one of my females had a tumor removed from her chest. also- you want her to be confined and not in a cage with wheels and things to be too active with. of coarse- every day- i let all my rattles visit her- so they would know she was okay and so she knew her family was still with her. plus i kept her "recovery" cage next to their house.
