Question

My baby Oscar seems to be getting agressive. He runs away and bites whenever I attempt to or actually pick him up. I try to call him at his level, so I dont look like a predator or anything, but he just comes and bites. I cant help but to be afraid of him now, but I still want to bond with him. HELP!
Thanks.

hello

hmm.. i wonder- is your rat wounded anywhere? internally or externally? perhaps he is in pain and afraid now? a vet may be the only way to know for sure.

if that's not the case- how long have you had him? if he is new to you and your home he might just need time to accept and adjust. however, if you have had him for a while that's a different story. Is he neutered? that might help, and also, i read in your other post that you have a female as well - perhaps he is being protective of her for some reason?! are they caged together?

also, do you have any other pets in the house that are bothering him around his cage? he might be on high alert if another pet is snooping around his "territory."

i can't think of any other reasons why he is becoming aggressive. i would check for wounds and try neutering him if he is not already.
good luck with him! i hope he calms down for you soon.

I don't have rats or anything but out of curiousity, is he housed with the female you think is pregnant? Maybe he's being protective of her?

Good luck .

In your other post, you mentioned that your female rat may be pregnant. Maybe he's being protective for that reason?

I really don't know anything about rats, but that makes sense in my mind, lol. I really hope you can figure it out, whatever it is!

Some male rats become bitey/aggressive and dominant when they are a few months. This is caused by producing too much testostarone and the only way to really fix it, is have the rat neutered.

Well first you gotta ask yourself some questions. What are you doing when he bites you? Are you sticking your fingers in his face, making him think that it's food? Is he in his house? Are you handfeeding him too much? Are you not feeding him enough?

My rat for instance will bite but it's only when he's in his house. If I take his house out, he'll let me pick him up. Also I don't pick him up until he comes to the door of the cage.
