baytril for the ratties

i took my boys to the vet, and he gave them baytril .3cc to give to the once a day for 5 days. this vet didnt know much about rats at all. arent the normal course for baytril 14 days? also, maybe should i split it up into twos. like not give the all the .3cc at once. any advice would be apprechiated. a new vet is needed for my boys. the vet even said they sound fine. i dissagreed with him. i mess with my rats all the time, i know if they are catching something. his guy didnt even know that baytril could be give orally!! so basically i am treating these babies myself.

Angry

Most vets I have encountered know less than I do about treating small rodents. I am told by State officials that any vet can treat ANY animal, even if they know nothing about them. (Maybe we need a new law). When I treated a Syrian hamster the Baytrill was twice a day for ten days. And it was done orally.

Good luck.

thanks, that makes me feel better. but what i am mostly having problems with now is, is 0.03 cc enough? too much? some people say there rat is under a pound and is getting 0.07 and some tell me for a rat over a pound 0.03 is enough. i am extrealy confused. but his isnt a diluted baytril mix. it is just strait baytril. nothing was added for the flavor. so i am sure i have to take that into consideration.

Did it came in a package? or the vet gave you what you needed with his own instructions? Cause if it has a pack, check it to see the instructions it has... it should tell you how much per weight.

Do you know the strength of the baytril used? There are different variations and if he made it up (as my vet does) -- hopefully he gave you the right dose for their weight. 5 days is way too short of a time for the meds to work fully. Chances are your rat will get sick within a month with the same thing. It should be 14 days at the very least. My vet always doses for 14-21 days (depending on the problem). If he is going to give you a problem about the amount of days. You can check out Ratguide to do some research on the matter - you can printout your findings and take them to your vet to see. Some vets really don't know what is up with rats and what they should be doing. They dont' get enough to see in their practice, and sometimes it seems more like a trial and error with some of them. Fortunately I've found an awesome vet who is reasonably priced - He admits he doesnt know everything about rats, but he is open to my suggestions and findings.

Good Luck with that - please get a second opinion if you can't get your vet to increase the treatment time. Also double check the times you need to give them to your rats. This may not apply to you, but usually baytril is given 2x's a day (at least with the medical probs I've encountered here at my rescue). ** I wouldn't split up the .3 dose though, so please do not do anything like that until you've consulted with a vet**
